The 2023 National Science and Technology Award has been noted as the most challenging to date, with a record number of submissions but a reduced total of 139 awards, marking an 11% decrease from 2020. The 2023 National Science and Technology Award, exacerbated by the hiatus in applications during 2021 and 2022, led to a backlog of outstanding candidates, intensifying the competition. Moreover, stringent nomination criteria, challenging online reviews during the preliminary evaluation, and fierce competition in the defense stage resulted in a rigorous selection process with an awarding rate between 10% and 20%. The healthy breeding group, of which this entry was a part, submitted 17 entries nationwide, yet only 2 were awarded, resulting in a mere 12% awarding rate.

This award-winning entry marks the fifth time in recent years that Tongwei's agriculture and animal husbandry sector has secured the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. Notably, it is the first time Tongwei has received this award for its scientific and technological advancements in marine fish nutrition and feed. It has significantly contributed to the systematic understanding of marine fish nutrition, metabolic processes, and immune mechanisms, as well as the construction and improvement of the precise nutritional requirements database of marine fish. It has been instrumental in establishing five national standards and three industry standards, securing four provincial high-tech product certificates, obtaining 74 authorized patents, registering five software copyrights, and publishing 254 academic papers. The research results have been widely applied, covering over 80% of the market share of China's marine fish compound feeds and promoting a cumulative output exceeding 4.278 million tons. This has generated a total output value of more than RMB 41.12 billion and profits and taxes surpassing RMB 3.10 billion.

Let's take a walk down memory lane of Tongwei's five national award-winning moments:
