Further Breakthrough in Technological Innovation - The First Slice of Half-cut Pilot Test Line of Tongwei Global Innovation R&D Center Successfully Rolls off the Line
2024-08-01

On July 30, good news came from Tongwei Global Innovation R&D Center (hereinafter referred to as the "R&D Center") - the first slice of half-cut pilot test line smoothly rolled off the line, marking the R&D Center's significant breakthrough in the field of PV cell slicing technology. Jiang Fangdan, Dean of the Photovoltaic Research Institute of PV Technology Department of Tongwei Co., Ltd., Guo Kuanxin, General Manager of Zhongwei New Energy (Chengdu) Co., Ltd., backbone representatives of the PV Technology Department, and the Zhongwei New Energy team witnessed this important moment together.

To further explore the cost reduction methods for half-cut HJT and TOPCon cells, and enhance the comprehensive competitive edge of cell and module products, the R&D Center has launched the slicing R&D project in 2024. After a long period of unremitting efforts and meticulous commissioning by the technical team, significant results have been achieved. The half-cut that came off the line this time adopts the central half-rod slicing technology, with advantages of thin slicing, high efficiency, and low loss. Subsequent development will focus on half-cut slicing processes for edge scraps and head rods, providing PV cells and modules with raw material support with lower cost and higher quality.

Tongwei Global Innovation R&D Center is committed to empowering new quality productive forces with technological innovation. By deepening the R&D of slicing technology and closely integrating it with mainstream cell and module technologies, it has built a "silicon wafer-cell-module" full-chain system. This move has laid a solid foundation for exploring and realizing efficient mass production solutions for PV products and injects great momentum into the company's technological innovation and development.

Since the beginning of this year, Tongwei Global Innovation R&D Center project has made breakthrough progresses: on April 26th, the first batch of process equipment was put into place; on June 6th, the first cell smoothly came off the production line; on July 30th, the first slice of the half-cut slicing pilot test line was successfully rolled off. The R&D Center has not only built an integrated workshop for heterojunction copper interconnection and perovskite cells and a half-cut slicing pilot test line, but also established R&D entities with the largest area, the highest production capacity and the strongest upgradable capability in the industry such as TBC R&D lines and module R&D lines. It has also built the PV testing center with the largest single-building area, the most comprehensive testing items, and the highest level of intelligence in the industry. In addition, it is equipped with supporting facilities such as R&D offices and exhibition halls, with a gross floor area of approximately 250,000 square meters.

The R&D Center covers the mainstream solar cell and module technologies in the industry at present, and is also committed to researching and promoting the next generation of high-efficiency solar energy technologies. It focuses on the R&D, pilot test, and mass production transfer of high-efficiency crystalline silicon cells and materials, as well as the development of high-efficiency and highly reliable module products, and research on PV test and analysis. In accordance with the directives of Liu Hanyuan, Deputy to the NPC, Vice Chairman of All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tongwei Group, Tongwei Global Innovation R&D Center has always focused on cutting-edge technology R&D and innovation in the PV field. It aims to enhance the core competitiveness of products such as cells and modules, actively respond to market competition and challenges, seize the opportunities given by the era, uphold the philosophy of continuous innovation, and effectively foster the green and low-carbon transformation of global energy.
